Volunteering
Volunteer Ginnie Gibson
A volunteer is someone who offers his or her help or services freely, without being persuaded or forced. The five WAVE Centres depend on and value their volunteers, constantly encouraging people with some time to spare to put their names forward to their nearest office. Essential qualities looked for in a volunteer would be; willingness to assist in the area, dependability and commitment to the organisation.
Usually volunteers are needed between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday, but there are occasions when evening work or weekends would be involved. The areas of interest for volunteering is varied, for example, minibus drivers, people to answer the phone, some to work in the office, youth work, befriending, fundraising, catering, anything really. Currently there are 110 volunteers working for WAVE—so go on if you have a couple of hours a week to spare, why not put it to good use?

CASE STUDY
“Five and a half years after I was bereaved I came to WAVE and received enormous help, which allowed me to get my life back on track. I started off by coming to the ‘drop-in’, received counselling and availed of ‘complementary therapies’. A year or so later I realised how much my life had been turned around and I wanted to put something back into WAVE. I became a volunteer and would help in the office, Mondays and Thursdays. By doing so, it enables the permanent staff to get on with other work. It gives me the feeling of being useful and starts the week off on the right footing.”
