Nurses get freedom of the City of Belfast

27th May 2016

Nurses were granted the Freedom of Belfast at a ceremony on Wednesday 25th May 2016 in the City Hall. Mayor Arder Carson who proposed the honour, seconded by Councillor Michael Long said that nurses during often difficult periods of our history cared for every citizen. Quoting Maya Angelou he said that many may never remember the names of those who cared for them but how they were treated. This was echoed by Janice Smyth the Director of the Royal College of Nursing who said that ‘over many decades , nurses from all sections of our community have served the citizens of Belfast without fear or favour striving to provide the very best possible nursing care, based upon an understanding of the needs of patients and a professional duty of care’. Freedom of the City is a wonderful accolade for  the nursing profession.
