Owen Smith MP meets with WAVE Injured Group
29th June 2017
'Helping to bring about peace and power sharing in Northern Ireland remains one of the proudest and most significant achievements of the last Labour government, indeed of any Labour government. Anyone who doubts that needed only to meet last week, as I did in my first official engagement in Northern Ireland, some of those men and women who lost limbs and loved ones in the 'Troubles'.
The survivors who spoke to me so eloquently in the WAVE Trauma Centre in north Belfast understand all too well the price that was paid for politics’ failure to reconcile deep and real differences of religion, culture and identity. They remain both the most compelling testament to the conflict’s human cost and the most articulate expression of the need for us never to return there'.
