UN Special Rapporteur Pablo de Greiff visits WAVE
17th November 2015
The Special Rapporteur Pablo de Greiff is mandated to deal with situations in which there have been gross violations of human rights and serious violations of international humanitarian law. Thematically, the mandate deals with the four elements of a comprehensive approach to transitional justice (truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence), which should “ensure accountability, serve justice, provide remedies to victims, promote healing and reconciliation, establish independent oversight of the security system and restore confidence in the institutions of the State and promote the rule of law in accordance with international human rights law”.
Mr. de Greiff has established as thematic priority areas of his mandate the need to further develop the links between truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-repetition, the necessity to increase the effectiveness of these measures when implemented in post-conflict settings, and of clarifying the linkages. The purpose of Mr. de Greiff’s visit is to explore these themes. He will report to the United Nation’s and to the British Government regarding issues relating to truth, justice, reparations and guarantees of non-recurrence.
