WAVE Centres' Day of Reflection
16th June 2017
The ‘Day of Reflection’ is a ‘Healing Through Remembering’ initiative and it is a day to acknowledge the deep hurt and pain caused by the conflict in and about Northern Ireland, to reflect on our own attitudes, on what more we might have done or might still do, and to make a personal commitment that such loss should never be allowed to happen again.
The first Day of Reflection took place on Thursday 21st June 2007. The purpose of the day is to “Provide an opportunity for people to remember the events of the past in a non-confrontational, dignified and respectful manner.”
There shall be a Day of Reflection event in each of our centres:
WAVE Armagh Centre- The Armagh WAVE centre will mark the annual ‘Day of Reflection’ with a short reflection ceremony at WAVE’s ‘Tree of Hope’ in the Palace Demense Gardens, Armagh. The WAVE tree was planted in 2010 as a permanent living memorial for all the people of Armagh, faithfully keeping alive the memory of all those who have lost their lives, were injured or suffered as a result of the ‘troubles’. It is also a symbol of our hopes for a peaceful new society and a shared future for us all.
Guests will be invited to attach a short verse or name of a loved one on memory cards which will be attached to the ‘Tree of Hope’. Everyone is welcome to join us for this short ceremony and afterwards in the council’s sensory gardens for a light lunch.
Please contact the Armagh centre for further details on 028375 11599.
WAVE Omagh Centre- The Omagh WAVE centre will mark the annual ‘Day of Reflection’ with a cross-community service and light buffet at 1pm. For catering purposes please contact the Omagh centre on 028822 52522 to confirm attendance.
WAVE Ballymoney Centre- The Ballymoney WAVE centre will mark the annual ‘Day of Relection’ with a special quiet room set aside from 10am- 1pm for anyone who would like to come to remember a loved one or simply join others on this poignant day. Staff will be available at the centre and refreshments will be provided.
Please contact the Ballymoney centre for further details on 028276 69900
WAVE Belfast Centre- The Belfast WAVE centre will mark the annual ‘Day of Reflection at 6.30pm with some delicious food. Two special guests will be in attendance at this event; Tommy Sands, the legendary songwriter and peace activist and Stephen Travers who is a survivor of the Miami Showband Massacre. There will be a minute silence in memory of those who were killed or injured in the ‘Troubles’, and this year we will extend this to the people of Manchester and others killed in conflicts across the world or through acts of terror. We hope that the evening will finish with Tommy playing ‘There Were Roses’ which would be a very poignant ending to what we all hope will be a memorable event.
As with previous ‘Day of Reflection’ events there will be time for individuals to write on the little brass tags which are on the trees.
For catering purposes please contact the Belfast centre on 028907 79922 to confirm attendance.
WAVE Derry Londonderry Centre- The Derry Londonderry centre will mark the annual ‘Day of Reflection’ with a cross-community remembrance ceremony led by the new Lord Mayor of Derry City and Strabane Council. The new centre located at 25-30 The Diamond, Derry Londonderry, BT48 6HP will then be officially opened by the Mayor. Guests will have the opportunity to see around the new building and reflect in a safe and quiet environment, a light buffet will be provided. For catering purposes please contact the centre on 028712 66655 to confirm attendance.
