Counselling and Psychotherapy
About the Service
Counselling services are delivered at all WAVE regional centres by a team of 25 specialist Counsellors, Psychotherapists and Psychologists. We offer a variety of approaches to suit client needs and choice, including CBT & EMDR therapies, along with Psychodynamic, Humanistic and Integrative approaches. Tailored services are delivered to people throughout the lifespan, from ages 6 yrs upwards.
WAVE Counselling operates Monday to Friday from 9am – 5pm in all 5 project centres (Armagh / Ballymoney / Belfast / Derry–Londonderry / Omagh). There is also evening appointments available in our Belfast project centre (6pm – 9pm).
At WAVE, all counselling is free of charge and in accordance with ethical standards (eg. BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling & Psychotherapy). The first stage of the counselling process will be an initial assessment where you will meet the counsellor and discuss how counselling could be of benefit to you.
If it’s agreed to proceed with counselling, you and the counsellor will review your progress after 6 sessions. The duration of sessions is approx 50 minutes each and there is a maximum of 12 sessions available, though in exceptional circumstances this may be extended.
Referrals to WAVE Counselling are primarily received on the basis of trauma, bereavement, injury or intimidation. However, once a link to the NI conflict is established, referrals can also be made for reasons such as relationships, financial issues, health concerns etc.
Referral sources are varied and include Self / Family, the Victims & Survivors Service, GP’s, Community Mental Health Teams, and various community & statutory organisations (eg. FASA, CRUSE, Nexus, Relate, Contact, CAUSE).
Following an initial assessment, up to 12 counselling sessions are available, along with additional sessions in cases of complex trauma and traumatic bereavement.
Since April 2013, in excess of 500 people have received counselling at WAVE, and in a recent evaluation there was reliable positive change for over 80% of clients & clinically significant improvement for 73% of clients.
Complementary Therapy and Counselling services link effectively to allow people the benefit of dual participation, whilst facilitating relief from distress and recovery.
Our holistic approach also allows health & wellbeing clients to benefit from other WAVE services including Outreach, Peer Group Support, Welfare, Trauma Training, and Advocacy (Truth & Justice).
