Peer Group Support
Throughout the organisation peer group support continues to be of benefit to members. In the past support groups have been set up for:
- Those suffering an injury and their carers
- Those suffering a bereavement
- Men
- Women
- Families of the Disappeared
- Parents that have lost children
With regard to the work with those suffering an injury, currently the work is on hold awaiting the results of a ‘mapping exercise’ looking at the specific needs of this group. This is being done in partnership with the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen’s University, Belfast.
Peer group support remains a core service at each WAVE Centre—some of the groups have been around for a while, for example, work with men and women and Families of the Disappeared, however others are relatively recent such as parents that have lost children. Whatever the group, meeting together with those of similar experience reduces isolation and encourages some to talk.
